After you’ve used-up the free needles packed with your new machine, which performed
flawlessly, why change to a more expensive needle?

Fabric Yarn Breakage (especially on knits)

Check your needle:

  •  If tip of point is worn or bent, change the needle.
  • Use ball point needles.
  • Choose proper needle point best suited for your material.

Sewing machine:

  • Set your machine at lowest speed possible.
  • Use a needle plate with a proper size hole.
  • Check the needle plate for any damage.
  • Adjust the presser foot properly.
  • Extend stitch length.

Thread:

  • Match thread size (regular/all purpose, heavy duty etc.) that is appropriate for the material and number of layers.
  • Use thread with smooth surface properties.

Skipped Stitches

Check needle:

  • Make sure your needle is installed correctly.
  • If tip of point is worn out or bent, change the needle.
  • Make sure you are using the right size needle for your materials. (ball point for knits and thin fabrics and universal/regular for most wovens and heavier knits.

Sewing machine:

  • Adjust the distance between needle and hook or looper.
  • Check the needle plate for any damage.
  • Clean out the space under the needle plate.

Thread:

  • Adjust the tension correctly.
  • Use good quality thread.
  • Use appropriate size needle.

Seam Puckering, Needle Line

Check needle:

  • If tip of point is worn or bent, change the needle.
  • Make sure you are using the correct type of needle needed for your materials.

Sewing machine:

  • To avoid puckering adjust the machine:
    • reduce thread tension
    • reduce sewing speed
  • To avoid needle line reduce stitch length.

Fabric:

  • Avoid puckering on slippery, soft materials by using interfacing.
  • Avoid needle line may be difficult for twill or satin materials because the fabric weave shifts when sewn.

Thread:

  • Try using thin thread or thread with less stretch.

Thread Breakage

Check needle: 

  • Make sure the needle is installed correctly.
  • If the tip of point is worn or bent, or if eye is damaged, change the needle.

Sewing machine: 

  • Check the needle hole in plate for any damage.
  • Adjust the upper thread tension properly.
  • Adjust threading of upper thread correctly.
  • Reduce sewing speed.

Thread: 

  • Make sure your thread is threaded properly.
  • Make sure bobbin is wound up correctly.
  • Make sure you are using good quality thread. Older threads can break easily.

Pulling Linings out of needle holes.

Check needle: 

  • If tip of point is worn or bent, change the needle.
  • Choose proper needle point for material.

Sewing machine:

  • Set the sewing machine speed as low as possible.

Thread: 

  • Use thinnest thread possible.
  • Use thread with smooth surface properties.
